This fridge is about 11 years old. No issues with it so far.
Opened the door and it was cool but heating up. Had probably been "off" all day long since the ice cream in the freezer was mushy.
Here is what I have noted so far.
Nothing was running (compressor or fan) and so we put everything into coolers.
Went into the evaporator section and the coils had no ice on them.
Removed the t-stat (p/n 2196155) on on the coil line and submerged in ice water. Could not get it to change state. Was reading on the 200 ohm scale since that is as slow as my meter will go but pretty sure it did not change state.
Had both doors open, t-stat removed (actually the whole harness asssmebly the t-stat is hooked to) and the compressor turns on! Wasn't expecting that. Coils start to ice over. Think to myself...CRAP, intermittant problem.
Leave it running overnight. Open doors in morning and barely cold again.
I then took out the defrost timer (p/n 2176648) and moved the timer knob around the clock until it clicked. Contacts did change state when I moved the knob.
Looking for confirmation that the symptoms I see are the t-stat and not the timer.

Hmmm...doing some more thinking. I had the doors open for quite a while when I was putting the stuff in the coolers and getting to the various components. The fridge was plugged in but never cycled on to try to maintain temperature. I found a good explanation on the cycle herre: http://www.appliance411.com/faq/howdefrostworks.shtmlIt appears to show that if the defrost cycle is on, then the cold control t-stat could be trying to bring the compressor on but can't do it because the defrost cycle is on. Which would keep the fridge from cycling...so defrost timer could be suspect but it does change state when moved manually. Just some more thoughts until a solution presents itself.

Ok...well just an update. Replaced timer and thermostat for defroster. They were about 30 bucks each at a local store so I didn't have to have them delivered but paid a little more for them.
Just heard the ice maker dump a load of ice...it did not do that last time. Think it is an 8 hour cycle on the timer now so hopefully one or the other fixed the problem.

THIS DID NOT FIX THE PROBLEM.

What I have happening is nothing restarts after the first "cycle". I have melted ice now. I had placed 2 of those frozen mugs in there to monitor them. They started to freeze as the cooldown process began, but I just checked them and they are no longer frozen.
Any ideas? Lacking ideas, its is going to be a new fridge tomorrow and this one will get relegated to the garage when I get it fixed.
Help please since I don't want a new fridge...although my wife sure will.

Could it just be the regular thermostat that has failed?
