Do I need to replace the shocks/struts on my Whirlpool duet washer? when the tub is loaded down with a load of towels etc. The tub sits really low and it appears that the shocks are nearly bottomed out. The tub is also not tight against the door gasket. The washer is level. Are good shocks much like car shocks as in really hard to compress?

If I need to replace the 4 shocks are there any tricks of the trade to make the job go easier?

There are two threads that have asked this question. The only response has been to refer the original poster to the service manual for replacement instructions.

I was hoping that an experienced service tech could answer the original question. How do you know a shock is bad? I removed one and took it apart and there is really nothing to them. They are a plastic cylinder that slides over a greased metal rod. They are not sealed. The friction of the thick grease between the plastic sleeve and the Metal rod and the vacuum effect of the trapped air is what makes the shock absorber to work. They are not like shocks on a car or even shocks on a rear hatch of an automobile.

All of my shocks still have friction, but they have about 1-2" of "play" in them.

Thoughts?
