My gas range is cooking food properly but I have begun to detect strong smell of gas while it is on even though it is lit and up to temperature. I was wondering what the potential problem would be. I have stopped using it until I figure out what is going on. There is no gas smell when it is off and the top burners still work fine.

You could have a bake glow bar going out. Turn it on and see if you can hear the flame turning on and off. Best thing to do is remove the bottom of the oven, there are 2 screws in the bottom back, take those off, and remove the bottom and report what the flame does. It should be a constant flame.

I removed the cover and watched the flame. After about 5 minutes the glow bar went cool and flame out. I did not know if this was because it hit the temp I had it set at or if the glow bar should be on at all times along with flame. When I initially turned the oven on, it took about 2 minutes for the glow bar to heat up and the gas to come on. Is that normal?

Was the oven preheated to temp after the 5 minutes when it turned off? 2 minutes is a long time for the glow bar to open the gas valve. If your able to take a resistance reading of the glow bar, do so. You should read between 50-150 ohms.
