Last week, all food and ice in freezer starting defrosting, had to empty it. For a few days, both freezer and frig were running at about 50 degrees F. We replaced the bimetal defrost thermostat as this seemed to be a possible suspect, with no change in temps. We called a repair service that told us that because there was no frost on the coils in the back of freezer, there was probably a leak in the system and the freon had leaked out over time. He said the unit was shot and we needed a new refrigerator. However, we had turned the defrost timer under the refrigerator and today the freezer was at 19 degrees. There is still no frost on the coils and the freezer temp right now is 25 degrees. Why such change in temps, and is the serviceman possibly right? Is it worth trying something else first before throwing this frig away?

From the syptoms, you probably have a failing compressor. Also, Amana's are known to get microcrack leaks in the internal tubing.
I would verify the condenser fan is working and see if the compressor is runing and getting the condenser coils hot.

I have similar symptoms on my 10 yr old Amana too. What if the condensor coils are not hot when the compressor is running and there is frost on the top half of the evaporator coils with freezer temp around 25 degrees? Where are these internal tubing? Is it considered part of the compressor?

The internal tubing I was referring to is any tubing not visible. From your syptoms, you also probably have a refrigerant leak.

Is a refrigerant leak worth fixing on a 10 yr old Amana, considering I still have an extended warranty on the compressor?

On a 10 year old fridg, particularly Amana, a strong NO. They are prone to developing unrepairable leaks. Even if the leak was found and fixed, you are probably talking about a $400- $600 repair bill, fridg not worth it.
