Recently my washer started banging a bit during spin cycle. Last night it started banging very loudly. I ran into the laundry room and it was walking across the floor. After stopping the washer I started adjusting the load inside and noticed that the tub moves from side to side and doesn't reach the top. I'm guessing that I need to replace the front struts. How do I tell if they're bad? Do I need to replace the back struts also? They seem ok.

It has never displayed a code. I stopped it right away and did'nt use it after. We took the front off. I just don't know what the struts should look like if they are bad. Would they be collapsed? There is probably a couple of inches of the rod showing. The tub seems to have dropped below the splash guard about an inch or so. Oh, by the way thanks for responding, sorry I didn't start with that because I am very grateful for your help

I should have asked you to check the Tub Displacement Sensor for proper operation.
From what you describe the machine should have shut down with an unbalance error code of dC or uC for such violent tub excursions. You may have two issues here.

I prefer to measure the TDS D.C. voltage swings to the Control Board but here is a thru the lid check process it’s in the Service Manual page 19.

Tub Displacement Sensor Diagnostics check.
It is possible the Tub Displacement Sensor may have failed try this check which is in the Troubleshooting guide stored in your washer console or refer to the SM.

a. Enter the Service Mode by pressing and holding the Enviro Plus and Spin Only keys for three seconds or the display reads “00”

b. Press the Super Wash key display reads “in”…something like that.

c. Press Delicates the Display will show “UC” (Unbalance Closed).

d. Push tub to the back right corner of the machine the display should change to “UO” (Unbalance open). Release tub and the display will show “UC” (Unbalance Closed).

e. Press Hand Wash.

f. Pull tub to the front left corner while pushing the tub down the display should change to “UO” (Unbalance open). Release tub and the display will show “UC” (Unbalance Closed).


If you fail this test it would be time to remove the machine front cover check if the TDS sensor has unseated from its mounting position between the Tub and the washer frame.

Here are some pics of the Splash Guard and Front Struts best I could do.

The Struts look like aI have around 2.5" of height from the piston rod to the top of the strut plate on the Outer Tub.


The last pic I show the TDS unseated for checks you don't need to do this.

Just make sure with the Front Cover off the TDS is lached properly to the Wash Tub and Washer Do the thru the lid check for range of motion check. If we need to get down to a more accurate measurement for proper range of motion check we will address.
