i have a GE side by side
It stopped getting cold
I changed the defrost thermostat and heater coil and cleaned the contacs on the defrost timer, power test at feed to thermostat read 121 volts
power test at heater coil with defrost thermoststat installed is 10 volts
thermostat was not frozen at test
could not get it frozen
only the bottom 2 coils are freezing on this unite
i believe either the compressor is losing compression or the unite has a leak and is low on refrigerent

help me with this and if it needs recharging tell me how its usually done i have the equipment to do this
I have removed and reinstalled ac compressor units
am a building contractor and have to remove unites from time to time to work on the areas were they are located

another question would you know exactly what type of refrigeren t is in this
r12 or 134a and can i just use 134a which i have

ow ive read i can use refrigerent taps to put gages on would they be at the ac suply house or at a parts store ?

any idead what my vacume presure should be and my compresed presureafter adding freon?

who would i call an ac repair guy or an apliance repair man?

thanks Gene for all your help!!OK got it fixed ether temporarily or permanently.
had a Friend who works on AC's help me.
we installed an inlet valve silver soldered it on, did a vacuum,
recharged it with a little less then a can of 134-A purchased at the auto parts store.
using my gages we charged it to minus 10 degrees on the 134a temp chart of the gages
which is equal to 15 pounds pressure
if it was an obstruction the vacuum pulled it out of the way
if i was a leak ill know in a few months
