So on Christmas Eve our Kenmore washer made a very loud screeching sound that drew my attention to it. I found the unit on in the spin cycle without most of the water out but the tub was not turning. I am assuming that something in the drive portion of the machine is broken. Examined the unit and it appears to be a direct drive machine. Can anyone confirm that for me? Need to repair it as inexpensively as possible so plan on doing myself as we have had 3 other expensive repairs in the last 2 weeks! Have zero experience with washing machine transmission /drive. Got a quote from Sears repair which I am a bit suspect about. $215 for up to 500 dollar repair. If it was just a belt I could replace it easily. Found a rubber part that I thought was a belt that came off broken. Does not look like a drive belt as it has 2 u shaped bends in it. A dampener of some sort maybe? Any thoughts on the issue with this machine are greatly appreciated.

This is a direct drive Whirlpool washer. Go to the sticky above to get the take apart video. Remove the pump, and motor, you may find a piece of the tranny coupler jaming the motor. Clean it up and replace the coupler. If ok, turn the tranny coupler clockwise till spin engages, if very hard to turn, you either have bad brake shoes or something stuck in the tub. It's possable the comb filter broke under the spin basket.
