If you need to order a Whirlpool OEM dryer shaft and the part called out is WP40113601 you will receive an unfinished part. Unless your lucky, and get old inventory, the part will be a few thousands of an inch too wide. The shaft will have a rough finish. Since this part is meant for use as a bearing shaft, it should be finished and polished. In its present form from OEM Whirlpool the only way to get a dryer roller over this part is by using a hammer. I won't speculate how long your dryer will work with this unfinished shaft. I spent half a day sanding and polishing this shaft by hand. To duplicate my results will require sandpaper in grades: 320,600,800,1000,1200,2000,3000,5000,7000,8000. You will then need polishing compounds or diamond paste with grades of 1.5 microns, 1.0 microns, and then .5 microns. This will kill an afternoon to accomplish and you do need some knowledge of metal finishing. The roller now goes on easily without a hammer.

I am not able to determine the fit of these exact parts but this tip might help someone else in the future. When I find a shaft that is too large to fit in a bearing ,etc and no other alternative is available I often put the shaft into my electric drill which has a chuck capable of accepting a diameter up to .50". With the drill on its highest speed setting and the drill clamped into my bench vise I use a file and eventually some sandpaper to reduce the diameter to fit into the bearing or housing. As another alternative I will put the shaft into my drill press if it is not too long and run in the highest speed to accomplish the same result. Hope this is helpful for someone else.
