My GE refrigerator did the same thing. The "de" display flashed and as you said the GE Use and Care Guide says to call for service. I checked the freezer for a few days and saw that there was no problem with food defrosting, so I figured that before I called for service I would try a simple fix. I unplugged the power cord for a few seconds and then I plugged the cord back into the power outlet. Sure enough the flashing "de" display light went out and was replaced by the NORMAL display light. I think what must of happened was that there was a temporary power failure that cause the diagnostic codes display to malfunction. Problem solved. No real problem at all in my case. http://forum.appliancepartspros...s/smilies/biggrin.gifgif

DE is most likely indicating a defrost problem.. open the freezer and take a look at the back of the freezer wall - is there a bunch of frost on that back wall?

There also could be a temperature problem due to a defrost failure, easy to check the freezer temperature to confirm.
