It should turn off when the ice/frost has melted off the evaporator coils. The defrost thermostat should open killing power to the heater. One way to check this is to put some ice cubes in a bowl in the freezer. If they are all frozen together after a couple days then too much heat is being generated by the heater. The defrost thermostat is the most likely culprit.

Never in 55 years have I seen the freezer glow red - freaky and unsettling. Interesting how it happened to many of us at night. Thanks all for peace of mind at 10pm.
