The drive hub in our Maytag Bravos X (MVWX500XW1 ) approx 9 yrs old, is disintegrating/corroded. We began experiencing some issues with the washer engaging the spin cycle a couple months ago, but it seemed like a one-off. Two days ago it stopped and we weren't able to get it going again.

We checked a host of things, all appeared normal. Then we took apart the agitator to take a look at the drive shaft. Well, everything came off like normal until we get to the drive hub. The screws are corroded and stripped, and their housing was falling apart as we removed it. We didn't know this was meant to be done *after* removing the nut, but we're not sure that would've worked anyway.

So now the rest of the drive shaft still seems corroded to the nut. We've tried vinegar, wd-40, clr, and even just trying to knock it loose with the hammer but nothing is working.

Here's what we're dealing with... Drive hub/shaft with agitator removed

ETA: We're thinking our water softener might have caused this, otherwise we're stumped. Also, we DO have a spanner wrench and are trying to use that, but since the drive hub is no longer attached, the entire basket just spins...we've tried holding the drive shaft in place and turning the spanner att he same time but they just wont budge, even tapping the wrench with a hammer doesn't move it.

My guess? Time for a new washer. This would probably be what is wrong and would not be fun to change out.
