Hey guys, I have a GE washer that is about 18 months old. Recently it has started leaving small brownish dirt spots on some of the clothes. Not every load but never fails to do it when my Wife washes something nice. I think I have figured out where the dirt is coming from but I am not sure what to do to prevent it. I think that dirt from my work clothes is getting stuck between the stainless drum and the hub that it bolts to. If I take a wet rag and rub it along the joint I get very similar looking dirt marks. I have attached a picture showing the joint I am referring to. Other than pulling the agitator and scrubbing this area regularly I don't know what else to do.
Our old GE washer was almost 20 years old and never had this problem. I should have fixed it again and kept it :(
Any other suggestions appreciated.
I am having no luck getting the pictures to attach :( Will try again later on or tomorrow.
Thanks, Bill

The brown spots could be a mixture of rust and oil. The washer has a stainless steel spin basket. It is unlikely that the washer itself will leave a rust spot on clothing. You can check carefully inside the spin basket of the washer. Wipe the entire inside of the washer basket with a damp, white wash cloth to see if you detect any rust. The wash plate or the top tub ring could be rubbing on the spin basket abnormally to cause residue that would stain the clothes. If this does not work, you may have a problem with the gearcase parts of the washer. For more help visit appliance repairs expert or call our professional at 416-727-1352
