I have a top loading washing machine. It stops usually in the washing cycle and there is a slight burning smell. If I turn it off and let it sit for about 20 mins I can spin the water out. If I try to start it in the wash cycle again it just makes a clicking noise. Any suggestions?

That is really going to depend on the model of the machine but by the age it sounds like you could have a Maytag Bravo. If so you are going to have to find the tech sheet and us it to put the machine into a diagnostic mode. From there it should give you some codes that may help to point you in a better direction. This sheet is normally accessed on the inside of the washer cabinet front in a plastic zip lock bag.
