Kenmore Model 110.22922100 - stopped during cycle and would not resume unless unplugged and cooled down; spun only at one speed despite moving selector between "delicate", "normal" and "heavy duty". Sounds like struggling to run, was noisy when running and emitted metallic/burning smell. About a year ago, I replaced drive motor and couplers because washer wouldn't run. This didn't solve problem, but replacing capacitor did. Had run without problems until recently. Someone suggested checking for socks wrapped around shaft between basket and tub. Disassembled and Found stocking and sock wrapped around shaft; removed and also replaced drive block while at it (old appeared fine and tabs were intact). Reassembled but symptoms remained same - humming motor, brief spin or agitation, then stopped as if overheating. I then Detached motor from gearcase/clutch and pump. Jumpered lid switch to allow motor to run without load from gearcase or pump. Both motor shafts turned freely and motor ran through spin cycles to completion in all three speeds. There was no water in washer, so I don't think it agitated. I then bought and installed a new gearcase and clutch. Unfortunately, problem not solved!

With new gearcase and clutch installed and the pump re-installed, it only hummed then shut off when put in spin. Tried spin again while using my hand to "push start" the tub - spun for a few seconds then stopped. Also, agitated briefly and stopped when in rinse cycle (again, no water in washer).

I then disconnected the pump from the motor to see if that was problem but there was no improvement. Pump is relatively new and moved fairly freely.

One other note - I noticed that when turning coupler on the transmission clockwise (spin) by hand (before installing it) that it was pretty stiff - much stiffer than the old transmission I removed. It moved easily when I turned it counterclockwise for agitate. Also when I slid the new transmission and clutch into the basket drive, it became much harder to turn the coupler clockwise. Not sure if this is normal or if this might indicate a problem with the new transmission or with the basket drive (not replaced) or both? I also noticed that the new transmission came with a coupler attached and it doesn't seem like this is usually supplied, making me wonder if this unit may have been sold previously and returned. It came in an FSP box so I don't think this is a bait-and-switch rebuilt transmission.

What are other potential causes? Basket drive? Timer? Capacitor? Motor?

I have the washer completely disassembled now, so can send photos of any component if it would help. Any and all help you can give would be appreciated. Thanks - Scott Brooks

UPDATE: I jumpered the lid switch, and ran the motor with only the gearcase attached (no pump and no basket drive). Symptoms are same - agitates momentarily, stops, agitates momentarily, stops longer. Tries to spin but motor only hums. So, that eliminates basket drive/brakes as problem, correct? This was done with motor and gearcase removed from machine and sitting on floor.
