I have an intermittent oddity that perplexes me.
Whirlpool direct drive washer. Occurs 1 in every 5-6 washes. Has occurred for approximately 4 months.

During 1st rinse of regular wash ONLY (not 2nd rinse, extra rinse, delicate rinse), water pump and spin engage at the same time, and spin stuck on high setting irrespective of dial setting and unresponsive to dial setting changes. After approx 2 min, timer briefly stops for 20 seconds, and restarts where spin normally begins, at which point spin resumes at set spin speed and is responsive to dial settings.

Seems to occur on xsmall, small loads ONLY, not large/xlarge ever, med loads once.

Clutch seems to not slip and remains cool even after spin cycle completed.

Since water pump and spin engage simultaneously at start of spin cycle, suspected neutral drain problem in tranny, but never occurs on any other spin other than 1st spin (and wife almost always uses 2nd rinse and extra rinse); and this does NOT explain spin stuck on high despite dial setting, does it?

Help??

Incidentally, timer disassembled and approx 5 contacts showed significant oxidation/corrosion, which was gently sanded away and timer rebuilt.

I think the timer is the issue and it is almost impossible to fix these once they have gone bad. So replace the timer and see if that solves the problem. If not, and you bought the part from this site you can return it.

Thanks sidfink43

I did in fact purchase a new timer from APP and did attempt to fix the problem with it - it failed after the 4th wash within 2 days.

So the timer was removed and packaged to be sent back to APP

So, at present, I'm trying to decide if rebuilding a tranny or buying a new one when it works fine 90-95% of the time is worth it. I suspect the plastic parts in the tranny/neutral drain have eroded in some way over 7 years making the neutral drain "slip" out 20% of time.

When it does misbehave it significantly and negatively impacts the washer/suspension due to weight and fluidity of water (tub bounces around off center and water cannot drain well due to centrifugal force), so ultimately it will wear out the motor coupling, tranny and suspension

But I hate to purchase new because nothing is made well anymore despite what the "experts" say

A tranny problem still does not explain why it only occurs on the 1st rinse cycle on regular wash and no other rinse

That's why I cannot figure this out

My wife thinks this is yet another appliance we own with a "ghost in the machine" - the regulator for our Amana NG cooktop needs to be replaced, but it was discontinued 8 tears ago and APP nor anyone else has a "suiitable" replacement; so everytime we turn a burner on/off, we play "russian roulette" to see if the diaphragm within the regulator lets large amount of pressurized NG flow through before blowing out the flame... several close calls with hair own my knuckles

Well I have no explanation either.

But I do strongly suggest you replace your gas top. Really, it's not worth the exposure to a problem. DO NOT FOOL AROUND WITH NG!!!!

Update 1/19/16:

Just 2 days ago, same problem (spin starts on high when water pump stars before water drained out of wash basin) started occurring with almost all wash loads and also during 2nd rinse and extra rinse cycle.

So, am I to assume that the neutral drain from the transmission is in fact the issue? And, since the new timer never fixed the problem, that the new tranny will?

Thanks for your help
