Wife woke me up saying the freezer had an "electrical" smell. Compressor case is 145 F. Compressor will come on and run for a 5-10 seconds and go off. It will cycle every 3-4 minutes. Wiring is cool and it appears to be pulling 12 A while running.

The freezer is still cold and food hasn't started defrosting.

A model number may be useful here.
Find your model number - AppliancePartsPros.com

If it has a condenser/compressor fan, is it on when the compressor is on? It should be.

Following is a good link on how to check compressor windings for continuity and grounding.
How To Fix a Refrigerator - Appliance Repair Guide - ACME HOW TO.com
Note that this can tell tyou if a compressor is bad.
it does not tell you that a compressor is good it may have other internal problems.

There is not a good way to check the start device or capacitor (if it uses one) unless it has visual overheating so in most cases you just have to try a new one.

The fan has been running continuously while the compressor cycles every 3-4 minutes. The model number is MFU20F3GW.

Compressor winding resistance is in the range of 6-12 ohms between the three terminals. There is no continuity to the compressor case.

I looked up a GW1 and a GW8 and neither one shows a condenser fan.
Are you talking about the evaporator/freezer fan?

In either case you have to check the compressor and its start device.

It appears to use a solid state start device. I believe it is only the freezer fan I hear.
