Washer is 8 years old.. works great, but leaks under the front access cover.
Screws are rusty, so guessing it has been leaking somewhat for a while..
Going to pull the cover today.. what should I look for..?
Noticed a small leak at the front boot, bottom of door..

Check the hose that comes from the tub to the pump, and the pump itself. You should be able to see the leak area easily once you have it partially apart.

I'll do that as soon as I get the screws out.. They are rusted in...

Got the access cover off. Had to drill out one screw because of rust..
The entire bottom of the washer has a layer of a gooey substance like dish-soap and water, but really has no evident smell to it.. Everything else look good, except the bottom of the front boot housing looks a tad rusty..
Thinking it may be time for a new unit.. I see signs of a leak at the top of the access cover, tho it may be from the door gasket! Not sure what to do..??

8 years is not a bad life for these models. And given that the water could have leaked into some of the drive components replacing the washer is probably the best idea as opposed to spending money on parts.

I'm currently pricing out new models.. Not happy with the $$, but I do get a GE discount, and they are rated pretty high.. Its been a good unit, and has been used quite a bit.. Thanks so much for the responses..!!

Ge's are hard to fix and the parts are expensive but when they work as built they do a great job. If you get something with any electronics be sure and price out an extended warranty.

You have been here a while, and worked with many people..
Are you allowed to make a recommendation on a brand for a new unit?
I was leaning to Maytag, but the wife found a GE she likes..

Actually I am a volunteer so I can do anything I want, well sort of.
If you are getting a top loader I recommend the basic Maytag/Whirlpool with no electronics. The GE is also good. If it is a front loader, they are pretty much the same but I lean away from GE because of their complexity, cost of parts and lean more towards the Maytag/Whirlpool. With a front loader I recommend the extended warranty, something that is almost never needed but this is an exception. And the fact that it is needed tells you something about front loaders.\

Hope this helps 25 years in the business and I agree with everything he stated above. New GE front load washers are extremely complex, expensive and very difficult to repair. Personally I own and LG front load washer, and have had issues, but i am pleased with it. ( well my boss is that is ) Extended warranties are a must for new equipment.
