Opened the fresh food compartment Thursday and it felt warm. Checked with a thermometer and it read 60F.
Took back panel off in freezer compartment and the evaporator was frozen over with packed ice. Defrosted with the help of a hair drier.
Removed machine compartment panel and noted that the condenser fan was not turning even though the compressor was running. Fan blade was rubbing on shroud preventing the motor from turning. Motor was very hot from being locked. Inspected the grommets that secure the fan motor to the shroud and found one that was worn which allowed the fan blade to sag and contact the shroud. Replaced the grommet with one from the hardware store for now. Fan now turns. Put everything back together and restarted. Temperature now will not go below 40F.
Went through the diagnostics and performed a manual defrost cycle. Everything checks out except for Service Test 1. The defrost thermostat showed shorted (closed). But the manual states that the defrost circuit is energized during this test so shouldn't it be shorted (closed)?
Don't know what to check next. Coincidence that the condenser fan stops and something else fails also? Could I have damaged something with the hair dryer defrost?
Any help would be appreciated.

Not sure that I understand but I will comment on the below. Hopefully it will be sueful to you.

The defrost thermostat opens just above freezing. So if there is frost on the evaporator coils it should show it as closed. Once the unit has defrosted, it should open. The defrost time is a set time usually around 30 minutes, but lets say all the frost is gone in 10 minutes then the defrost thermostat opens killing power to the defrost heater. This prevents additional heat in the freezr compartment which cou;ld partially defrost yoyr food.

The condenser fan not working would cuase the compressor to get hot and also run more. The frozen over evaporator coil sounds like a defrost problem. If the coils are clogged with frost/ice the evaporator fan cannot pull air though them so it does bnot cool properly. The freezer temperature rises. Sometimes this shows up first in the fresh food section because the freezer is not cold enough and also the fan cannot circulate the air poroperly into the fresh food section. Don't know what to check next. Check the freezer temperature. It should be between 0 and 5 degrees F. Check the evaporator coils to be sure that they are not frozen over again. Also check the frost pattern, it should be fairly even. Also how long have you waited for it to cool down below 40. Give it a minimum of 24 hours. |

The manual states "In order to perform this test the defrost heater will be energized". So is the correct thermostat state during this test "closed" (shorted)? The defrost thermostat opens just above freezing. So if there is frost on the evaporator coils it should show it as closed. Once the unit has defrosted, it should open. The defrost time is a set time usually around 30 minutes, but lets say all the frost is gone in 10 minutes then the defrost thermostat opens killing power to the defrost heater. Also how long have you waited for it to cool down below 40. Give it a minimum of 24 hours. Been running for about 20 hours.
Regardless of where the fresh food temperature is set from factory default of 4 to max of 7 the temp will not drop below 40F.

Damper is working properly. How do you know this? Service Test 6 is a damper test. Watched it open and close.
I would give it a little more time. You were right! These bottom mount units take longer as you are trying to push cold air up.It seems to be okay now, 35F in the FF section and zero in the freezer at the factory default of "4". I'm impatient it would seem.
