I have a GE modle TFX27PF refrigarator. About every week to week and a half the unit foems a ice block on the lower coil. I have replaced the heaters, timer and therostat. When I take the cover off The top part of the coil is ice free. The lower section is one block of ice. Both heaters are in series. After I defrost the coil the unit cools back down. The flapper between the two sections is working and I never find ice in that part. The first time this happened the heater was bad (open). I replaced the heaters and thermostate at that time. Next I replaced the timer. Any more Ideas as to what might be wrong?

Here are your parts

The given model number seems to be missing several digits at the end so you will have to choose a unit from the Matching Model Numbers section.

The next time it happens remove the evaporator cove in the freezer.
Do not let the coils de-ice as the defrost thermostat must be frozen for the below to work.
Now force a defrost cycle by turning the defrost timer cam with a flat screwdriver.
It only turns in one direction. Also there is usually a hole in the cover to let you do this without taking anything apart.
Now check that both heaters come on.
Be careful that you do not burn your fingers.

I took off the back cover. Then turned the time till it clicked for deforst. Waited a few minutes. When I opened the freezer the top heater was bright red. The bottom heater was a dim red. They are in series. Is this how it should be. I'm still getting a ice block just above the bottom heater. The top section is clear. The heated turned off before all the ice is melted on the bottom section. The heater kit was surpose to be a direct replacement. Any more suggestions

I am not sure if this is how the elements should look when heating.
If possible move the upper heater to the lower position and see what happens.

I would have thought that if anything the lower element should get hotter or at least be the same.

Perhaps start a new post with just this question and with luck someone who knows for sure will reply.

The last time the unit started to warm on the refrigerator side I swapped the position of the two heaters. I have had no more problems with the unit warming up. The heater unit came reassembled. But it was assembled wrong.
