Initially started as loud banging at spin cycle that degraded into grinding. The tub spun and worked through the cycle but noise so bad felt like would destroy machine. Replaced basket drive and clutch. Loud noise like sticking almost, Sounds like needs lubrication, but it is working. Could it be brakes dragging? Son says brake spring a lot tighter than original he pulled, same color, yellow. Sears Kenmore 80 series.

If it runs and turns what should I check now? Noise sounds like hell breakinng loose in the laundry room.

Did you check the motor coupler when you had everything apart? If coupler is intact and motor and transmission shaft are not rounded off, I would say you have a faulty transmission. Could be that the teeth have sheared off of the plastic spin gear in the transmission.

the coupler is fine. it spins ... It does a full cycle no problem, loud as all get out but it spins dry without a hitch. can it do that with a faulty transmission or stripped gear?

Did you replace the brake cam driver when you replaced the clutch? It could be that the tab on the clutch band is not making proper contact with the brake cam driver but if that does not appear to be the problem, I would say it's in the transmission. The plastic spin gear can have torn up teeth on it so that is slips causing the noise but still engaging enough to drive the spin pinion gear which is what drives the clutch.

Here's a photo of how the clutch band engages the brake cam driver. The tab on the clutch band drives the tab on the brake cam driver and the brake cam driver releases the brakes and then drives the basket drive.

yes we did but, we're going to take it apart and check it all. we changed the basket drive, and cluth. FYI there were flat metal chunks in the grease at the top of the shaft opposite the cam. Also son says brakes much tighter on new assembly.

Son asks Is it possible the new basket drive is defective? brakes on one side was a lot stiffer than the other and it was harder for him to get it back in than the guy on your video, and he's a strong electrician. How would he know if it's a bad basket drive? Also he said to mention there is some small amount of play/wobble in the agitator shaft.
If it washes with no noise or problems and only makes this noise in the spin cycle what are your thoughts? I saw something somewhere that was saying something reverses to spin, is that the case? Thoroughly frustrated and The coupler is good, the motor and transmission shaft isn't rounded off... confused over here. Still haven't disassembled and reassembled.

Could it be should we send the basket drive back and ask for a replacement?

I don't think it's the basket drive because the grinding noise starts the very instant the motor starts which is before the basket drive gets going. You can run the machine with the cabinet off and lid switch bypassed so you can observe and listen to try and better localize the source of the noise. Yes, the drive motor runs in the reverse direction for drain/spin as it does in agitate mode. Try running in spin with drain pump pulled off the motor to rule out something in the pump making the noise. You don't have to disconnect the hoses, just pull it away from the motor.
