I have a 27 year old Maytag stacker and have replaced $2-300 in parts over the years. In 2013 I did a major overhaul and replaced the (top part) Mounting Stem/Tub Seal Kit and the (bottom part) Tub Bearing Kit, among other stuff. It ran fine until 2015 when the useless Rubber Injector Valve went bad.

So I amazoned this valve and the plastic nozzle and installed both. Worked great until I ran a load - now the lower tub bearing leaks. Crazy thing is that it leaks more when the washer has a full load than when just a partial load.


Before I take it apart, again - anyone have suggestions ??

who does not want to spend $1500 plus on an new stacker.

Hi.

There is nothing much you can do, but taking the washer a part and checking the condition of graphite rings at the mounting stem and the seal. If it's not grooved you probably may reuse it, but I would not take a chance. Wipe them clean, then pull up the seal and clean the surfaced of the tub around the opening, apply some liquid soap to the inner bottom portion of the seal and then push and turn the seal until it will be REALLY tight against the tub. Next take a Blue RTV silicon and squeeze a nice and even layer around the seal and slightly work it in using a finger (of your choice).
If you will do that water should not leak again for the long time.

With the rust towards the bottom of the shaft and the bumps / grooves on the shaft near the top
Would you say I have a premature Agitator shaft seal "ASS" failure ?
I guess the ASS is supposed to hug the shaft tightly and keep the
water from leaking down the shaft

I was finding small (BB size) hunks of grease in various places when I was taking it apart, and I can see small empty pockets inside the seal where I guess it was originally packed with grease.

I think the contact area for the Agitator Shaft Seal would be above the rust area and the bottom half of the black area
above the rust.

The Mounting Stem Tub Seal appears to be in good shape. <shown below>

Action Plan: sand the shaft a little to make it smooth and replace the Agitator Shaft Seal ?

Hi.

Your plan seems to be the only solution: the replacement transmission and agitator kit is no longer available :( The hard discs on the top of the boot seal and inside the mounting stem are the graphite rings.
