Hi All, I've been trying to keep a vintage 1966 Frigidaire running for a long time. I just changed out the compressor fan a couple of weeks ago. Suddenly the other day both the compressor and fan suddenly stopped running. I put in a new relay and start capacitor. The timer seems to be working properly (at least using a continuity check) and I can hear its motor. However, nothing comes on but the inside lights.
Things that I've tried: 1) The fan works if I hook up the wires to the power. 2) The compressor doesn't come on if I hook up the power and touch in the capacitor wire. 3) Continuity check on the timer. 4) Don't recall that the compressor was hot when last running.
What else can I check? If the compressor is done, wouldn't the fan still run? Is it time to give it up? :(
Thanks in advance.

A model number may be helpful.
Usually the compressor and the condenser/compressor fan are wired in parallel. So if one is on the other should be on. Sound like power is not going to them.
Could be a couple things. 1. The control thermostat is not closing. 2. The defrost timer is stuck in defrost. Just because you can hear the timer motor does not mean that the timer is OK. |

Hi Denman
Thanks...sure enough I had to turn the thermostat dial and click - it's on again. Model number FCPI-19BK (you probably won't find it anywhere unless you're a FRG guru).
I was super fortunate to get an identical 1/3HP YT relay #5901195, but concerned that if it should ever go out again I would be done. I read about a Supco relay R041 would this be a way to go or should I be looking at at RC041 instead. What is the difference? Can a relay be rebuilt?
Lastly, I am thinking that I should stock pile some parts, but what other parts should I keep for handy backup? I have a parts manual for this model, but all the parts are NLA. I don't think lightning will strike twice like on the relay. I'd appreciate any advice for universal replacements - thermostat (6580915), other relays or common frig repair items.
Sorry for too many questions, but I'd love to keep this amazing machine going for as long as I can.
Thanks!

Oh...and why did the relay go out in the first place?

I cannot answer most of your questions.
The relay probably went just to use over the years.
As far as stockpiling parts I cannot recommend anything. What will finally kill it will probably be a sealed system problem which would be expensive to fix. |
