As soon as the washer filled, it started making a very loud horrid sound. Like a screech... Took the front panel off. The motor seems to be spinning just fine. As I look deeper into the washer, I can see the drum turning very slowly.

Update: I removed the pump - same thing. I removed the belt. Motor spins fine when turned on, but when it's turned off, it sounds like a bucket of bolts as it's spinning down. With it off, if I spin the motor pulley by hand, it feels very rough and it makes a grinding noise.

I am not getting your model number to come up, but if this is a top loader than it sounds very much like a transmission issue, in which case it may be time to replace the unit with a good basic top loader.
