I've been doing a horrible job trying to repair my Kenmore 90 series washer. It stopped in the middle of a cycle, after filling, before agitating. It will still fill, but will not agitate or spin, regardless of cycle. I can hand turn the agitator. When comes to a point in the cycle where the motor should turn, there is only a slight hum, but no motion.
Here's the part where I sound like a moron. I've basically been throwing parts at it. Foolish, but that's what I've done. So here's what I know: the timer, motor and capacitor are all new and the motor coupler is good. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Might be something in the drain pump jamming it and preventing motor from rotating. Unclip pump from motor and pull it away from motor shaft and then try spin mode.

Thanks, Eric. I just tried that and got the same result.

Remove motor and set it on the floor still connected and try running motor in spin mode. You must bypass the lid switch to do this with cabinet removed. Rotate transmission input shaft by hand using one half of coupler attached to shaft. CW rotation should produce spin, CCW for agitation.

Eric, rotating the transmission by hand results in the movements you described. However, when I tried to run the motor it wouldn't start unless I gave it a bit of a help with my hand.

Sounds like your not getting power to the motor start winding. Since you have replaced the motor, capacitor and timer, you have ruled out everything except for a wiring problem. May be a broken wire or wire terminal. Closely inspect the motor connector (red and yellow wires/terminals). Also check the two red wire connections at the capacitor and inspect the timer harness connector and wires.

While examining the wiring I realized the lid witch was hot. Previously I had bypassed it mechanically (tied it back), not electrically. I removed it and jumped the connection. When I tried to start the motor off of the machine, it took off immediately.
After re-installing the motor I am back where I was. I've checked the connections again and I think I'm good. Now I'm wondering again if there is some sort of restriction/jam.
Thanks again.

Roger
