As stated, my washer fills, but won't agitate. Does spin and drain. Even brand new belts just slip on pulley and burn. I have read everything here I can find on the subject. I suspect it might be the transmission, but I'd like some direction from someone with experience before I tear into it.
Motor is turning belts fine in both modes. Agitator turns freely by hand from inside drum and nothing stuck underneath it. It just seems that something within the shaft is bound up, keeping the assembly from turning, thus causing the belts to just slip. I have it open from the front and bottom, but I can't really see if the center or input shaft is turning.
When the belts first started slipping a couple months ago, I replaced them and washer worked fine (or so it seemed) for a little while. Then belts started slipping again ... I replaced them ... didn't help this time.
What's the chances it could be in the clutch?
Does this sound familiar to anyone?

Sounds like a faulty transmission. Tilt machine back and remove the belts. Rotate center pulley CCW by hand. If it binds and can't be rotated and there is nothing under the agitator, then the transmission is bad.

Yep, I had done that, but by pulling on the belts .. and it was definately bound up.

You should try it with the belts off. It's possible that the drain pump is binding. The pulleys run in different directions depending on whether you are in spin or agitate so the pump could be working ok in spin direction but not in agitate direction.

Pump pulley turns freely in both directions. Took off stop lug and drive pulley, tried turning input shaft and it is LOCKED TIGHT. So, I opened the transmission case to have a look and there was lots of oil still and I could see no damage to any of the parts. I felt all around in the oil and bottom of transmission, no stray pieces of anything and everything is in the correct place.
Now I'm wondering what could cause the transmission to bind up. And I keep wondering if it could be the brake or clutch.
What do you think?

The only function of the brake is to prevent the tub from moving around during agitation and to quickly stop the tub after spin. The clutch (inside the transmission) is only engaged during spin. I would take the transmission out so you can take it apart and find the problem.

Thank you for all your previous advise! I took the whole transmission out of washer. This was an EXCELLENT video to guide that process:

It took me a while, but I got it all apart. I'd like to rebuild the transmission and I'm cleaning up the whole output shaft part because a new one is $50+. I realize most people would say it's not worth it. But it is to me because it's keeping me from having to buy a new washer that I can't afford.

What I'm just a bit uncertain about though, is how tight that output shaft should be in the tranny case. Because if I put it back in it's just stuck, can't turn. There seems to be some build-up of something on it (seems like metal?). Using a brush grinder to try to remove some. Just don't want to take off too much!

Outstanding Sheila! You must have an inner love for fixing things. Same here. So many people feel quickly overwhelmed, give up and just buy a new machine, most of which are junk nowadays. You said you couldn't afford a new machine but kudos for tearing that washer down and fixing it!

I came upon both this thread as well as the post here: http://forum.appliancepartspros...transmission-repair.html which described exactly the problem I was having with my 31 year old Maytag LA712. Looking at the picture of the shaft posted by OzarkHillBill67, it looks likes her machine has the newer orbital transmission whereas my machine has the older helical transmission, but the problem was similar so I took a crack at it and, while I have not finished the project because I am waiting for a gasket to arrive, I believe that I have the problem licked.

In my case, the machine would spin and empty the water but would not agitate. I removed the inner and outer tub and left the transmission in place. With the transmission in place, I was able to remove the top of the transmission and found, just like others, that the output shaft was extremely difficult to turn. I removed the output shaft from the case. (Note: Removal of the pin which holds the gear on the output shaft requires a press. I happen to have one so I was able to do this. Without the press, damage to the gear and yourself is the most likely outcome. Even with the press, this operation has safety risks.) Once the shaft was out of the case, I was able to clean it up. I did this by putting the shaft in a lathe and going over it with some steel wool and kerosene. (Again, this lathe usage is something that should not be done by someone who does not know what they are doing, and if you know what you are doing, you are smart enough to know not to do this. Think about this!). After cleaning up the shaft, I could fit it back into the housing and it would spin freely. I reassembled the output shaft and transmission top using a new O-ring seal (outside of the case, below the collar on the shaft), again with the help of a press. The same safety warning regarding the use of the press applies here as well. I also used some kerosene to clean up the transmission housing top. (Again, careful with the solvents.) Additionally, I emptied the transmission of the 31 year old oil and have some new transmission oil ready for when the transmission is reassembled. I am now awaiting the arrival of the transmission gasket and I am expecting some good results.
