I was given a microwave. Upon inspection I saw a big area of rust in the back corner. I bought some appliance paint and while painting the rust I discovered there was a hole in the middle of the rust, about 1' long and 1\4' wide. I don't know what it's hiding, but i have seen microwaves (including this one) that have a piece of cardboard screwed (?) to the inside of the microwave. My question is, can I just cover the hole with something or is it a loss?

The cardboard on the side is to let microwaves into the oven cavity from the magnetron.
The magnetron is also in a sealed housing that is grounded to the oven case.

I would junk the unit.
It could probably be fixed with a piece of metal screwed/bolted over the hole.
either on the inside or outside of the oven case.
The problem is that you have no way to check if this actually stopped the microwaves from leaking out of the oven cavity.

If I do decide to cover it, the metal can't stay exposed, right? Do I have to paint it over with the appliance paint?

It does not matter if it is painted.

The side that contacts the bare metal of the oven cavity should be bare metal so that the plate is grounded to the cavity.
