Thank you for letting me join. This unit is about 20 years old. About 6 months ago both fridge and freezer were not cooling sufficiently, gradually getting warmer and warmer over a period of weeks. A Whirlpool tech came out and found that there was a piece of cardboard stuck in the condenser fan blades keeping them from turning. He removed the cardboard, the fan resumed turning, and the unit returned to working normally.

Six months later, it has started behaving similarly for the last several weeks, so I checked the fan and while there was nothing obstructing it, it was not turning whether the condenser was cycling on or not. So I tried to give the blades a little spin to see if I could get it to resume turning, but the blades are very stiff and will not spin freely at all.

I figured that meant the fan motor was bad and I should replace the fan but I thought I should ask if there is anything else I should check first. Thanks.

Here are your parts.
Parts for ET18HN - AppliancePartsPros.com

Your model number seems to be missing a few digits at the end so you will have to choose the correct unit in the Matching Model Numbers section.

The fan motor is item 43 in section 06.

You could check if there is 120 volts across the motor with a motor.
If yes and it does not spin then replace the motor.

Also if the motor is stiff when the unit is plugged in but spins OK when unplugged it is a symptom of a bad motor.

The model number came from the label in the door; I will check the back for the rest of the numbers.

I went to test it and the positive lead on my meter broke. I didn't want to poke my hand in there with just the lead wire in my hand so I may have to wait to test it til I get a new lead (or maybe not, depending on the info below).

Plugged or unplugged is the same, very stiff with no free play. Do I still need to check the voltage?

Thanks!

I would replace it.

You could check for power across the fan at the fan.
