Hello. My Kenmore SxS has stopped defrosting. The refrigerator side is 45 degrees, with the control set to max cooling. The freezer temp is 0. I can hear a low humming sound, but I can not hear the compressor fan or the compressor.

Fridge hums for a while and then it goes completely silent. The freezer is circulating air and I can hear the fan. All of this began after a power failure when the power kept shutting off and restarting. I can see light frost through the grates in the back of the freezer. Can someone please help? Thanks.

I shut it off for a couple of hours. I can hear the compressor now along with the evaporator fan. I see the middle louver/vent is covered with ice.

I cannot find any info on the given model number.
Please check it.

Sears numbers are usually 3 digits, a period and then an additional 8 digits.

The model number is correct. This fridge is two years old. Here is a link to parts direct:
www.********************************.com /partsdirect/part-model/KENMORE-Parts/Refrigerator-Parts/Model-10651103110/0582/0165000?searchedModel=10651103&blt=

After I shut it off yesterday, I tried to remove the wire shelves from the freezer side in order to remove the panel so that I could view the ice on the coils. The shelves are stuck in ice that has formed behind the holes. Thanks again.

Sorry but I cannot find any info on it.

Have you looked for the units tech sheet.
It may be under the unit or taped to the rear access panel.

You need it so that you have the procedure for forcing a defrost cycle.

The model is listed on parts direct website. I could not find it on appliance pros. On the manual it also list models 106.5942* and 106.5943*. It was manufactured in April, 2012.

Sorry but I still cannot find any info with the given model numbers.

I did some additional searching.
Are you sure that the model number is not 106.51103110?
I did find some info on that unit.
If you go to the Sears parts site they have actual part breakdown diagrams which may help you confirm if this is your unit.
Unfortunately Sears does not share these with other parts vendors so they are not available on AppliancePartsPros.

See the attachment for the tech sheet for the above unit.

Yes. 106.51103110 is the correct model. I found the tech sheets on PartsDirect. I tried to post the link to Sears. How do I troubleshoot this issue? Should I begin with the defrost thermostat or the cold control? Thanks.

Sorry for not getting back to you sooner but I was at the cabin over the weekend.

You have to find out if the compressor is running all the time other than when it goes into a defrost cycle.
You can usually hear it but also should be able to feel if vibrating.

If on all the time then it is a symptom of a defrost problem.
The unit is trying to get to the freezer set point temperature (0 to 5 degrees F) but cannot because the evaporator fan cannot pull air through the evaporator coils to cool it enough.
Also continuously on could also be a sealed system problem.

On this unit the evaporator (freezer) fan, condenser (compressor) fan and the compressor are wired in parallel so when one is on they all are on.

Thanks, I thought you forgot about me. I almost missed your reply. (no email notice)

I have cleaned the coils and monitored the refrigerator. It appears to go into defrost mode, but the ice does not melt. It goes entirely silent. Compressor and both fans turn off. It remains like this for 45 minutes and longer. Then it kicks back on. The drip pan underneath stays dry. Freezer is -10 to -20 degrees. Refrigerator side fluctuates between 38 and 45 degrees.

My problem now is that I have been unable to remove the back panel in order to examine the heating element. According to the videos and instructions, the panel is supposed to be lifted up from the bottom, flexed over the two tabs and pulled down and out. The panel will not bend. It appears to be stuck on styrofoam inside. Here is a pic attached. Thanks again.

I do not know when you took the picture but it looks like the 6 screws that hold the panel are still there.

If all the screws are out then you will just have to slowly/carefully work at it till it comes loose/off.
