There are several things that could cause that type of noise. If the noise appears to come from inside the tub, the teeth that allow the ratcheting of the clothes mover may be worn, making replacing the agitator assembly necessary. If the noise is from lover in the machine, like towards the very bottom, you may have a faulty pump or bearing in the pulley having issues. Where does the noise seem to come from, can you tell?

Thank you! I suspect the lower pulley kit will need to be replaced. This is the most common repair needed on this style of machine. The pulley kit has been redesigned and comes with complete installation instructions, including pictures. You can remove the belt and manually turn the pump pulley to rule it out. The pulley kit for your model is available at the link below. Whirlpool 12002213 Thrust Bearing Kit - AppliancePartsPros.com

Excellent, that should not be a difficult repair with the included instructions. If you run into trouble, just post back and I am happy to help!

put the thrust washer kit in, did not fix the problem . there were plastic shavings on the bottom of the washer, I thought the thrust washer kit was the problem. i took off the agitator and it does not appear to have issues with the splines. the shaft that drives the agitator seems to turn a little bit with a grinding noise and the shaft seems to move a little to the side when it is rotated.

The shavings are from the snubber ring, that is pretty normal. It is like a fine white powder substance. So, the shaft that the agitator is connected to moves side to side? If you start the washer without the agitator on, can you feel that shaft and the grinding?
