We have a kenmore 90 series washer that, during the spin cycle, stopped spinning and won't drain. At first, it sounded like the machine was trying to spin, but now it doesn't do anything. We've looked at the coupler, and it doesn't appear broken, but we can't spin it. Also, there is a gasket that is hanging/loose above the gearcase, and we can't see where it belongs. Any help would be appreciated!:)

Does it still agitate? Did you remove the motor to check the coupling? With motor removed, did you try to rotate the gearcase input shaft, CCW for agitation, CW for spin? Can you provide photo of the "gasket". It's probably the sound dampening ring that goes around the brake hub to prevent a ringing noise when the brakes are in contact with the hub.

If it agitates ok but won't drain or spin, does the motor make any sound at all in drain/spin or is it totally quiet? If all quiet, you may have a bad lid switch which you can bypass as a test.

It did still agitate, before the spin cycle stopped working. We haven't removed the motor to check the coupling - just tried spinning it, and it doesn't move... Is there a "how to" on removing the motor?

The motor does makes a slight humming sound when on the spin cycle, but only for a few seconds.

Picture shows gasket on the right of gearcase.

Thanks

Yes, that is the sound dampening ring that has come off the outside of the brake hub. You need to remove the washer cabinet for better access.

How to Disassemble Whirlpool/Kenmore Direct Drive Washer - YouTube

You should be able to rotate the coupler from underneath as you have tried. If it won't budge, there may be something jammed in the drain pump which is on the back of the motor. When you get the cabinet off, release the clips that hold the pump on and pull it off from the motor shaft. Leave drain hoses connected, just push pump out of the way. Check to see if the sound dampening ring has gotten caught up inside the clutch and brake area. If it has, get it out of there. If you can't get it out, you will have to remove the gearcase to gain better access to get it out. If you get it out, try running spin mode with that drain pump still moved out of the way. You will have to bypass the lid switch with cabinet off in order to do this.

Thanks for the help... There was a child's sock jammed in the drain pump. The gasket was not caught up anywhere either. The washer is running as I type :)

Ok, you should put that sound deadening ring back up around the brake hub. If it seems real loose like it would fall off again, just cut it and remove it. If you don't get any ringing noises during spin or when spin stops that annoy you, then don't worry about replacing it.
