My sister has a floor model gas furnace with a grate. Sporadically the furnace will not come on. Sometimes if you mess around with the thermostat ( raise/lower setting ) it will come on. Works most of the time. Had the same problem around this time of the year last year. Then started working again. Worked all winter, until this past monday. However, it did start working again. Is it just as simple as the thermostat? Does power need to be off to the thermostat before it is change? I can get the make/model # later if need be. Where is the best place to look for the model #?

How do you do that ? How will I know if the test is good or not?
your probably tired of talking to me by now. Quick question on my refrigerator that was froze up and is now working: I unplugged the ice maker that we werent using to give us more space in the freezer. Just wanted to make sure there was not a problem with the open plug that the ice maker plugged into still being in the freezer.

I had not bothered it since it was working. It went out again last night so i jumped the wires and it kicked on. On a two wire system, does it matter which wire goes where? they are both white and as far as i can tell they are not marked and neither is the old thermostat. Do I need to turn off the power? will it short out the new thermostat or furnace? I disconnected and reconnected the old one without turning off the power

On the 2 wire system, does it matter which wire goes to thr "R" & "W" ?
Not sure the old thermostat is labled.
