The top 3 inches of the freezer coils had ice buildup so I checked these forums and replaced the defrost thermostat and checked the defrost heater element and got something around 50 ohms so I left it (I do have a new one on hand). I made sure all the ice was melted before powering up. The fridge is now doing the same thing it was. When i turn it back on it gets to temp in a few hours (freezer 1 degrees, fridge 37 degrees) but then warms up over the next few hours. If I power cycle the fridge, it goes back down to proper temp but then warms up again. Can coils freeze up that quickly? I did replace the "starter" on the compressor motor last year, but if that was bad it wouldn't get cold at all right?

Compressor you can usually hear it but should also be able to feel it vibrating. Is the condenser/compressor fan running? Is the evaporator/freezer fan running? Could be a control board problem since removing power from the unit for a short time resets it so it starts back up again. [COLOR="Blue"]Can coils freeze up that quickly?[/COLOR] Depends on the ambient humidity. When you did a manual defrost the humidity in the unit became high so that humidity will condense on the evaporator coils. But it should clear off after he first auto defrost cycle. Then humidity is mostly due to opening the doors but what is stored inthe unit can have an effect. Perhaps check tthe door seals just to be sure you do not have a leakage problem. both fans are working. The compressor seem to click on after a manual defrost but not after a quick power cycle. The freezer gets down to temp once but when I open it a few times (or maybe when enough time passes?) the temp starts going up and the compressor never seems to click back on. There is still a small build up of frost on the top of the coil.
I guess the control board would be next?

The freezer coils are still icing up just at the top and the compressor won't seem to come on after the initial startup cycle. I'm going to replace the freezer thermistor next.
