The bottom of the agitator turns correctly. The top piece appears to be gear driven. Inside the agitator are 4 nylon cogs that should engage the gear but are not doing that. Are there replacement parts available for this and what exactly needs to be done to remedy the situation.

What is the complete model number of the washer? You can find it under the lid.

Never took apart the agitator - what happens when you remove the center nut below the cap?

I have a 7/16th socket with extension but I am concerned about the ease of removing and replacing the dog ears in the depth of the cylinder.

Thanks for a description of the task - would anyone have step by step instructions before I gp get the agitator repair kit. (video would be great help too.)

Finally - my Whilrpool LA5580XTN1 - stopped agitating and spinning. Is this kit the correct solution?

Thanks again
Carl

Carl,

If your washer does not spin them it has nothing to do with the agitator. Can you post more detailed problem description?

Gene - thanks for your reply and you are right.

After further review - I have no issue with agitator. It is during the spin cycle where we hear the motor running but there is no spin. We've noticed that the wash remains wet (not spun dry) and thus explored further.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Also - if you could rate such a repair with a High to Low complexity - I want to confirm whether "not so technical me" should attempt this.

Thanks again,
Carl

Carl,

If the motor runs but the washer does not spin and agitate, most likely the problem is a broken motor coupling (#13 on the diagram). In order to inspect and/or fix it you have to remove the washer cabinet.

If you know how to handle a simple tools this part is not too difficult to replace yourself. The instructions are attached to the reply.

I have a similar problem described above (motor runs but the basket doesn't spin) but on a Whirlpool washer with model number LA7780XSW2. Am I also in need of a motor coupling? Same part number?

Additionally, I have removed the agitator (upper and lower portions) from the drive shaft. I got a sturdy grip on the grooved drive shaft with a pair of vice grips and it won't turn. Is this a clear sign of anything else?
Thanks,

David

Hi David,

Very likely the problem is a bad coupling but you have to dismantle the washer to confirm it. The part number is the same as in the previous post. Click on the part number to watch the repair video.
