Our 2.5 year old whirlpool gas oven burner stopped lighting 3 weeks ago. Through online forums we determined the oven ignitor was probably the problem (no glow or visible spark, but we could hear a clicking noise and hear/smell gas for the couple of seconds it was trying to light). The burner did light with a match. We replaced the ignitor and all worked fine for 2 weeks, now the same thing is happening. Is there something else we should check? I have read that this is a newer type of ignitor and possibly not as reliable as the older glow type? Broiler and top burners work fine. Thank you for any advice you can provide.

Same issue here. I have replaced the ignitor on our Whirlpool oven, and it worked again briefly, but now does not. However, I can ignite the burner with a match. The broiler burner works without issue.

dmargosh, where did you buy your replacemnt ignitor? We ordered ours from sears parts direct, I am wondering if it could be a faulty batch? The ignitor did have the same exact part # on it as the one we took out so I am confident that it was the correct part.

That's an interesting thought. I was assuming it was one of the control boards, but my broiler works fine, and my understanding is that one board controls both. Will buy another ignitor and see how it goes.

I ordered another ignitor too and am really hoping this one does the trick. Not sure what else to try. At 2 1/2 years old you'd think that the other parts should still be fine.

No luck with a new ignitor. New spark module is next...

In case someone else finds this thread in the future...

It turned out that it was neither the ignitor nor the spark module, but it was the wiring harness. The wire from the module to the ignitor was frayed and nearly worn through in a spot not far from the ignitor. I suspect one of the resident mice in our nearly 90 year-old house. Anyway, all working like new now. Hope you were able to solve your issue seagirl.

Thank you for the update dmargosh. Our ignitor mysteriously started working again right when the 2nd replacement arrived, so I am guessing the ignitor was never the actual problem. If it stops again (which I am fully expecting) I will take a close look at the wire b/c it seemed that simply jarring the stove in the process of accessing the ignitor 'fixed' it.

Sounds like the harness and you might want to order it now because mine was on back-order and took about 2 weeks to arrive. Also, if it's frayed like mine was and touching the chassis, then it may be sending a lot of voltage through the oven when it's igniting. On my oven I has to remove the three back panels and left side panel, but it was pretty easy to replace. Good luck!
