My Whirlpool Dishwasher Model GU940SCGB2 has suddenly started acting up. None of the wash cycles except "China" will come on when pressed. I've checked for obstructions and damaged parts but haven't seen anything. The overflow protector moves freely.
I am currently running the china cycle and it seems to be functioning OK although when I tried this cycle earlier, it ran but the lights flickered of every 20 seconds or so.
I've tried pressing the lock/unlock button, which on this model also is the air dry button and all it does is kick everything into the cancel/drain mode (even when it's not running).
Any ideas as to how I can trouble shoot this or solve the problem?
Thanks!

Here are your parts Parts for Whirlpool GU940SCGB2 Dishwasher - AppliancePartsPros.comSee the attachment for the tech sheet. Have you tried removing power from the unit for a couple minutes to see if the control board will reset? Sounds like a control panel (console/keypad) or a control board problem. The usual way to troubleshoot this problem is to check the panel (keypad) switch outputs and then if it is OK replace the control board. Unfortunately they do not publish the pin-outs for this keypad. Try getting into diagnostics to see if it will help narrow down the cause. Perhaps try the following cleaning procedure. If that does nothing then I would replace the control board first as it seems to be the more likely cause from your description of the problem. Connector Cleaning / Checking Unplug the unit Open it up Remove the ribbon cable from the keypad to the control board at the control board. Clean the edge connector. Use electronics contact cleaner or isopropyl alcohol. If it is the type where there is not a connector just the insulation is removed, it can be cleaned with a pencil eraser. Do not use an ink eraser as it is too abrasive. Check the tracks in the ribbon cable for hairline cracks. A magnifying glass helps here. Would not hurt to clean the connector on the board. Use electronics contact cleaner or isopropyl alcohol and a tooth brush. Be gentle and do not reconnect till all the solvent evaporates. Reconnect everything and give it a try. The parts for this unit look pretty expensive so unless it is in very good shape you may just want to replace it. |

I got inside and cleaned the contacts and reassembled. Now a different set of touch pad controls works but not the China setting.
So, is this a console issue?

So, is this a console issue? I cannot be 100% sure but that also would be my conclusion. It is hard to say because a wonky control board can do a lot of weird things. Try shutting the power off to the unit and then see if the problems remain the same. Do this a couple times. If they do I would go with the control panel. If they change I would go with the control board.
If you decide to replace the control panel or control board, you may want to order it from AppliancePartsPros as they will let you return it if it does not fix the problem. See their return policy. Most companies will not let you return electrical parts.
Please do not order both of the parts at once and just return the one that does not work. If people do this AppliancePartsPros would probably have to change their return policy and that would be a shame. |

Thanks. I'll try that again and see what happens. Based on your feedback and what I've seen so far, I expect it's the console. If nothing happens differently after turning the unit on and off a couple times, I'll order that and see if it does the trick. Love the return policy. Takes the worry out of trying this.
