Hi.
Was it snow or hard ice? The snow on the top would point to the evaporator fan motor.
The defrost failure normally will give the solid pack of snow covering the hole evaporator.
If the evaporator motor runs fine now I would wait for some time and see how it's doing.

Hi. Locate in the refrigerator top right defrost timer shaft. Rotate it CW very slow until the unit stops. In 5 min. check if the defrost heater is on. If it's working - replace the defrost timer Part number: WR9X489
If not - check for continuity the heater and thermostat (the thermostat must be ice cold when checked). Defrost heater Part number: WR51X10055

Hi all, First post here.
I have been looking all over but cant seem to find my answer.
I am replacing the defrost timer in my Gibson Apollo fridge, this is the second time in about 25 years.
The first replacement timer was a Lux timer, identical to the original and replacement was a breeze.
Now the second one is a different story, it seems that they just use universal timers these days and after following the instructions I cant seem to get this to work. The compressor doesnt shut off when i advance it to defrost.
I have reconnected several times with the same result,
What am I doing wrong??

Simon. Thanks for the reply Simon but I think I got it now. It seems that the a particular terminal on the Lux timer had no markings but on the instruction sheet of the universal timer it show that terminal as "L". so I connected the wire to T1. Well it is actually a 2 gang common terminal on the Lux with no internal connections, so I simply moved that wire to a common terminal on the new timer and all is good now.....woohoo !!

Hello!
I have a freezer on top Hotpoint fridge. The Freezer works great, but about 5 days ago the food compartment started warming up and not cooling. I have removed a bunch of lint from the coils under the fridge, I removed the back panel where there was a little bit of ice build up on the coils but not much. I put the back panels back in place loosely in case I need to get back in there. I checked the door gaskets and tried unplugging and resetting the fridge and freezer temps. The food compartment is now cooling to about 50F after 20hrs and I can feel a small amount of cool air coming into the compartment from the ceiling damper, but it just won't get and colder, please help!
