I have a Kenmore 90 plus series, model 110.28942891, serial number CJ2505975, that has suddenly stopped agitating or spinning, with no prior indication of a problem. The probblem is the same on all wash settting. In the wash cycle the tub fills up and drains after the right amount of time but will not agitate or spin. When in agitate/spin mode it sounds like the motor is running, just no motion. If the lid is up in spin mode you still hear motor sounds. I did not hear anything unusual when it stopped spinning, but the washer is in a separate room and I doubt I could have heard any unusual noise.

What can you suggest to check for the problem? The machine has been excellent and I hate to replace it with the new more problem prone models

Hi.

The problem is broken motor coupling. Use the video clip for the instructions.

The coupling Part number: 285753A
Part number: 285753A

Thank you. Post the results.

You're right the couple was thrashed. all 6 prongs broken and the rubber part was disintegrated-now just need to wait for the parts.

Thanks for the help

I can't figure out how to start a new thread...what if the kenmore washer 70 series won't agitate or spin (but drains just fine) and makes loud grinding sounds when it attempts to agitate or spin...but it is NOT the motor coupling?! I checked.

Hi.

In your case it's most likely bad transmission. For better diagnostics provide the complete model number.

Thank you.

I figured out how to start a new thread and provided the model number on the other post. I feared it was the transmission...I was just a little hopeful it MIGHT be something else:). Its 12 years old...about that time to say goodbye...I just wasn't ready. But after waiting a week for a part and then working for three hours on it yesterday, I'm moving to an energy efficient washer. Comes tomorrow! Thank you for your reply, Simon:). I've been able to learn a lot about washers in the last three days!
