No parts have to be removed. You just have to disconnect the wires. If there is no quick disconnect plug for the defrost heater, then cut its wires and splice them back.

i am having the same issue with ice building up on the lower coils in the freezer. i have replaced the timer, the defrost heater, and the thermostat. i still have the issue. I turn the timer and the heater does come on. what else could it be? it is a GE frig, MSX27DRTAWW.

Gene,
Thank you for your guidance. I haven't replaced any part as yet but did open up the panel in the freezer and defrosted the frost/ice built up. I also unclipped the thermostat and put it back on, as well as pushed up the heater as it seems to hanging a bit.
The above was done on the day of your post and since then cooling on the fridge has been okay. But if I do get a frost buildup again I will try and change the thermostat/ heater as suggested by you.

What about the rest of the coils? How they are covered?

the upper section of coils are always ice and frost free. it is always only the bottom section.

Normally the coils should be about 100% covered with thin frost. If they are clean, then make sure the condenser coils (under the refrigerator).

If it would not help, then there is something wrong with the sealed system. It has to be checked by a certified tech.

The coils under the frig are very dirty. How does that affect the frost inside?

cleaned the coils under frig. still only bottom section getting frost. :confused:
