The dish soap will not open on it's own during the cycle. I opened up the panel and find that the protective flap covering the little motor behind the detergent cup was melted to the motor and the motor itself is brown/burnt looking. Is it necessary to test this any further or do I assume it is burnt up and needs a new

Dara, If the latch assembly was accidentally jammed up with detergent or something similar, the solenoid could overheat get hot and burn. I'd be a bit surprised though, it is only activated for 45 seconds, twice during the complete cycle, ( detergent cup open and rinse aid dispensed). You should check the solenoid circuit, and the linkage to the latch/catch and wiring. If there is a failure, you'll need to purchase the detergent cup assembly
Part number: AP4455014
Part number: AP4455014

as the solenoid is not available as a separate component.

Thanks and Good Luck,
:) :) :)

So this burnt looking piece is called the solenoid.. but I have to buy the whole detergent cup assembly? Is it fairly easy to switch out for someone like myself who is not mechanically inclined? ;) Also.. is this a part that can be found sometimes locally or is it mainly an internet order.. I noticed the link you sent me was for whirlpool. that will still work on this Maytag? I accidentally had one digit wrong on the model number.. it is actually MDB7609aww1 ... and I have had this for 2 yrs, 3 months. Very dissapointed.

Dara,
We understand your issue with the dishwasher.
Yes, it is a Whirlpool part number, because that corporation aquired the Maytag corp. several years ago, and still use the product name.
With the proper model number, you should be able to acquire the part from a local distributor, but, we have the best prices available, and will be less expensive in the long run. It's an easy repair, you're 2/3 of the way, disconnect the wire harness plug, remove the 8(eight) screws and push the dispenser out through the opening, Reverse the procedure, and you're done.

:) :) :)

HELP! We bought a brand new detergent assembly... Installed it.. and it is STILL DOING THE SAME THING! Cup will not open during the cycle. What else could it be?? I was sure this would fix it since it appeared that our solenoid was burnt up! Any other ideas?

Dara,
Here are some instructions, so you can program up a diagnostics and run the cycle to see what does or does not occur:
"SERVICE DIAGNOSTICS CYCLE NOTES NOTE 1.
To invoke the Diagnostics Cycle, perform

the following key presses or actions in less than 6 sec while in standby: Heated Dry > Normal> Heated Dry> NormalTo rapid advance one interval at a time, press the
Start/Resume key.
Invoking Service Diagnostics clears all status and last ran information from memory and restores defaults; It also forces the next cycle to be a sensor calibration cycle. Calibration cycles begin with a “sensor check” to determine whether the dishwasher has an OWI soil sensor. If the control detects an OWI, it forces two rinses to occur prior to Final Rinse (to assure clear water), then calibrates the OWI during the final rinse.
You should find the technicakl data sheet attached to the back of the kick plate, or attached to the lower frame.

Basically, since you replaced the detergent cup assembly, You've either got a damaged wire or faulty control board. You could disconnect the wiring to the detergent cup, and attach a meter to the wirtes and run a short cycle or the diagnostics and check for 120 VAC across the two brown wires to the dispenser solenoid.

Thanks,

Dara/Elijah,
Keep us informed, you'll probably have the issue figured out in no time. But. Your Dishwasher is a "Finley" built unit(based on the model number) and is a "Whirlpool" built unit.

We're here to help, so drop us a line anytime.

Good Luck,
