While wiping down the control panel, the whole thing just went blank. The top burners still work. We tried to pull out the range to check the panel but can't get the panel off. Has anyone got a clue what's broken and what it might cost to repair? The economy has dealt us a huge blow (I know, and yes, we are 'joining the party') and I'm afraid to just call a repairman without any idea of where it might lead.

The control board went bad. It is most likely water from you wiping it down, went inside and shorted out the board. Tom
