the washer started to make loud whirling noise when spinning. i took the front panel off and while the noise kinda seems to be coming from the motor area, i read a post where it cound be a rear bearing on the tub. It did kinda seem to have a slight noise that matched the turing of the motor shaft.

curiously, i did not see a belt on the front of the motor. how does it drive the drum? any suggestions for verifying if its the motor or a bearing? and are ther step by step instructions on replacing the motor?

thanks. ( i am fairly handy.)

This is what I do in the case of a noise I can't quite locate. Remove the rear cover to access the belt. Remove the belt ( don't catch your fingers!). Start the machine on a spin only and see if you still hear the noise. (The noise wont be as prominert without the load of the tub on it.) If you don't hear the noise at all it's probably the spin bearing. Go to the front of the machine with the belt still off and open the door and reach inside and spin the clothes basket. If you have a bad spin bearing you will hear the bearing making noise. Also you can reach in there from the front again and lift slightly on the front of the spin basket. Normally if the spin bearing is bad, you should be able to feel the slack when you push up and release presure repeatedly. It will "clunk" if the bearing is bad. If you feel no "clunk" the spin bearing is probably alright. Let me know if you need more assistance and remember to be careful of your fingers! That big pulley will hurt you bad if your not careful and it won't even say it's sorry. Good luck! =]
