Both of the above parts seem to be good. Very likely the problem will return and the solution is to replace the control board.

Is this control board only for the defroster, or is it the brains of the entire refrigerator?

In my previous post I referred to the wrong control board. The control board which controls defrost cycle as well as many other functions is shown as #21 on the diagram. - The control board Part number: AP4434691

I have to decide whether or not to buy this $186 board. I have this reservation that even if I replaced the board, my problem could still persist from some other source such as bad wiring or a loose connector somewhere in the path between the board and the defrost heater or thermostat.
How does a board like this go bad? And how commonly does this occur?

A chance for something else to cause this problem is so small I would not even think about it. Also do not forget that you can return any part purchased from APP. So the only you can loose is a small shipping charge.

Do you agree that the problem could be several things, not necessarily the board you suspect ...
(A) Defrost control board.
(B) Power converter between household A/C (60 Hz, 110 V) and one or both refrigerator computers.
(C) Main computer board (which may be corrupting duty cycle of compressor, for example).
(D) Wiring or connectors in the A/B/C paths listed here.

This board has a build in low voaltage transformer as you can see on the picture. (C) Did not get clear which part did you mean (D)It is always possible and it is a good idea to check it. Gene.
