We inherited this dryer which was working fine until today. It shut off after about 5 minutes. My wife restarted it and it only ran for another minute before shutting down again. This time it would not restart. After checking circuit breakers and tracing the electrical pathways I quickly got to the Thermal fuse, which I bypassed for the time being. The drier appears to be working fine for the moment and I am ordering a replacment fuse. The big question is what would most likely have caused the fuse to blow out in the first place? Bypassing and replacing the fuse may only be a temporary fix. Something must have caused it to blow, right? Or could it simply be age?

Usually a dirty or malfunctioning vent system.
Also could be a loose or plugged up blower wheel.
Or the operating thermostat's contacts are welded together so you are running on a high limit. Try a low heat setting to see if the temperature is being regulated.

sounds like the motor is bad .. the thermal fuse is a one shot deal..meaning if the dryer ran for a 5 mins. and shut off,it should not start agian . if it did for a few more mins. and shut off agian there more problems...
