When we first put the dryer on it makes a squeaking sound but within 5 minutes it goes away and clothes dry fine. Is the belt starting to go?

I doubt it is the belt though it may need replacing.

More likely culprits are the belts idler wheel, a rear drum support roller, the front drum bearing ring or motor bearings.
