I have ordered the new element - unsure how remove current burned out element and install the new one. Does the oven need to come out from the wall or is it possible to replace the element directly inside the oven?

If you are dealing with an electric oven here, and if pulling it away from the wall would facilitate unpluging it from AC power, then by all means pull it away from the wall and unplug it before working on it.
Changing the heating element is pretty streight forward. Your safety is what is important.
Hope this helps,

When replacing the element, make sure there is no restriction hitting the end of the element, could be shorting out to ground on some internal frame member!
If so, you will need to pull out the oven. Also, if the element blew out like a roman candle, you may have damaged the control. Just make sure when plugging it in, that the oven will turn off when reaching the set temperature.

The element did spark like a roman candle. I am wondering if the controller is damaged? Does the element get straight 240V or is it somehow restricted with the controller?

Thanks,

Gary
