Hello,

My Kenmore front load washer recently developed some very annoying symptoms. The Kenmore washer was already in my condo when I moved in 7 years ago, and I'd say the washer is about 8-10 years old. It served me well with twice weekly use up until two weeks ago when the problems started.

Whenever the drum rotates, I hear a (loud enough to be really annoying) squeak at one (same) point in the rotation. Then during the final spin cycle it seems like the load becomes unbalanced and it starts making a really horrible, very loud combination shaking/rumbling/screaming/knocking sound that seemingly can be heard for miles. I turn it off, let the drum come to a stop, move the dial to a bit later in the spin cycle (slower speed), and the squeaking returns but the unbearably loud sound does not. The clothes are obviously not as dry upon removal and drying in the dryer takes about twice as long. This has happened on 3 consecutive loads of various sizes.

I have amateur handyman experience with various home projects but have zero experience with washers and dryers. Can someone tell me what are the likely problems and estimated costs? I'd ultimately like to know if it is better to attempt to repair this washer or buy a new one. Hopefully I can get the answer here instead of calling in a pro to make a house call.

Many thanks!

Sounds like a failed bearings and/or fractured spider to me.
As you say you have some DIY skills the following may prove informative: -
