When voltage is applied to the valve coil, it becomes magnetized, and lifts the plunger, the coil it encases, and allows the gas to flow through the valve and ignite. All coils/solenoids work on the same principle, electricity flowing through a coil of wires create an electro magnet, which works like a "gate" and it opens as long as the electricity is flowing. Good Luck, :) :) :)
