Just recently the spin cycle on our washer has become extremely noisy. The motor makes a slight growling noise even when only in the wash cycle. Could the spin cycle noise be coming from the motor, or are there some bearings in the tub that are going bad?

It sounds like you could have both motor and bearing problems. The bearing is sold with the outer tub, and believe me, you do not want to know the price of the parts.
If you want to tackle the bearing removal there are third party providers who will sell you the parts and even rent the tool to remove and replace the bearings, but it is still somewhat expensive, and whether or not you want to do it depends upon your repair skills and how much you like this machine, (it is a pretty good model). Search the Internet under Neptune Bearing Replacement and you will find several sites and videos.
