I have a 5 year old GE disposer that has always worked fine. At the completion of a 3 month kitchen remodel, I was re-installing the disposer under the sink and now it will not work.

I have checked the power connections and they are fine. The reset button is depressed.

My voltage tester indicates power to the various wires in the housing so now I am completely lost.

Could the motor have siezed up during the downtime? But I would think if that were the case you would at least hear the motor hum and attempt to start.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Are you using a test light or a meter? Maybe your losing neutral somewhere. I have let disposals sit around for years and reused them no problem.

I was using a test light. Since my post, I used the broom stick trick and spun the blades. The unit was not jammed and turned freely. Then I tried pluging it in again and sparks flew from the outlet. I think I will just buy a new disposer.

it might not be a bad idea to check the wiring in the outlet as well There is definitely a dead short to ground somewhere you can always hook a cord to disposer and plug into another outlet to verify bad disposer
