Just bought a used American washer- worth gold where we work in West Africa. Need to make best guess to diagnose a problem since I'll have to order parts and find favors for their delivery in the months to come. Luckily we always have time in Africa!

First wash- agitation but no spin. Water pumps out well. Pulled front panel and observed all I could. Turned belt, pulleys both ways by hand. Didn't see anything after playing a few hours, closed it up. Ran next three loads no problem. Fifth load problem repeated.

Can anyone help me walk through some diagnosis?

Wow, not sure what you are doing in West Africa, but I bet it is doing good for some folks who need help.

I am asssuming the motor is running when it does not spin. If so, then the usual cause of your problem is a bad spin bearing, this part here.

Part number: AP4009132
Part number: AP4009132

It is a pretty easy fix, just tilt the machine up and get someone to make sure it does not fall and you can get to the parts with no special tools needed. Your biggest problem will be getting the part kit to where you are.

Good luck, hope this fixes things.

Yes, I've seen the motor run on spin cycle and have confirmation from the water pump working.

I read a number of related threads and am also hoping it is a bad spin bearing then. Is there any way to know whether it could be something in the brake instead?

The key clue is that the drain pump is fine but the machine doesn't spin. If the brake were locked, it should strain the motor when it tries to spin, interfering with the drain pump since the motor drives both.

The job is not overly complicated but it is CRUCIAL to keep all the little washer in the correct order when you do it. Also, aligning the plastic parts as you reassemble is a pain in the neck, but it can be done if you always remember that it will go together without shoving if things are properly aligned.

BE PATIENT. Accept that it may take 8 or 10 tries to align things and don't get frustrated. You should be fine. :c)

Thanks for the extra thoughts regarding the brake. This gives me some peace. It seems it will be a couple months before a friend visits and can bring parts, but I'll go for it!
